North-East England Joins European Region of Gastronomy Platform as Candidate for 2029 Award

In a proud milestone for the United Kingdom, North-East England has officially joined the European Region of Gastronomy Platform as a candidate for the 2029 Award. This marks the first UK region to enter the prestigious network, highlighting its vibrant food culture, community-driven initiatives, and strong commitment to sustainable development through gastronomy.
The official signing of the Protocol Agreement took place on 18 March 2026, during IGCAT’s 31st Platform Meeting, hosted by Kvarner, European Region of Gastronomy 2026, formally welcoming North-East England into the Platform. The region was represented by Chris Jewitt, CEO of Food and Drink North East, alongside Dr. Diane Dodd, President of IGCAT, underscoring a shared vision to harness gastronomy as a powerful tool for local identity, community empowerment, and cross-sector innovation in education, tourism, and agriculture.

“This bid is a chance to recognise that our gastronomy doesn’t need to conform – it needs to be seen, supported, and celebrated. To do that, we need collaboration, togetherness, and a shared vision. If we come together – across regional kitchens and communities – we can show that the North East’s food identity is not only worthy but extraordinary and on our terms”, stated Chris Jewitt, Founder and CEO – Food and Drink North East.

The candidature is supported by a diverse and collaborative stakeholder network, combining expertise from local governance, tourism, education, and the hospitality sector. Key partners include Newcastle Gateshead Initiative, driving regional development and cultural promotion; Food and Drink North, championing local food and beverage producers; Newcastle College, contributing education, training, and skills development; and Big River Bakery, representing innovative local food businesses and craftsmanship.

The region now joins a distinguished network of past and future awardees committed to promoting food as a catalyst for sustainable cultural and economic development.
